68.8 miles, 12,280 ft (gps showed 77.4 miles and 13,475 ft) Me and John. Highlights include the Collegiate Range, where multiple 14ers are just off trail and can easily be climbed, and the San Juan Mountains, where the trail remains above tree line for days at a time and climbs to elevations of over 13,000’. Little Browns Creek Trail is a wonderful trail, but will intersect with the 4WD road to Antero, which will be a depart from the relative quietness of the CT. The remainder of the CT’s first segment was good hiking- well maintained trails, forgiving switchbacks, ample water- but not much in terms of views until I hit the high point on the western-facing ridge with an unoccupied campsite at the 17-mile mark (mile 14 of the CT). It was the day after a heavy rain so the trail was a bit washed out and definitely moderate steep. A nearby route goes up Mount Shavano, another fourteener. There is a Mount Princeton Hot Springs sign at the turn. We wanted to camp in this area. Beautiful hiking! Hike-a-Bike: 6.5 mi. Some bikers would have wiped us out if we had been coming around a blind curve. Date: Aug 31, 2011. Segment 14 — Chalk Creek Trailhead to US-50. One dog on leash, one trail runner, three mountain bikers, and about 5-6 other hikers. We went just 5.75 miles in, ate lunch, then went back to the Chalk Creek Trailhead where we started. Would definitely stay another day and shoot for Shavano or antero if I were to do it again!! Otherwise was a great hike. 4 stars = lovely hike, would happily do again
